How we measure

Zero is not the bottom. Zero is the turning point.

The Regeneration Index. What the scale means, and the four pillars it is built on.

The Regeneration Index

Most scores measure what a system produces.

Ours measures what it restores, and whether it can keep going without us.

−100
Degrading

It needs constant input and still declines.

0
Self-sustaining

It holds on its own.
The turning point. It stops costing and starts giving.

+100
Fully regenerative

Maximum regeneration capacity.
It gives back as much as this system can. Regeneration is complete.

Most land starts well below zero. That is normal.

What matters most is direction. A farm at −20 and climbing is a better asset than a farm at +10 and sliding.

Zero is the middle of the scale, not the end of it. The work is only complete at the far right, at maximum regeneration capacity.

What the score is built on.

Three pillars read the state of the system. A fourth reads whether it changes anything beyond itself.

Weightings across the four pillars are still being set. Not shown here.

A continuous, gated score. Gates hold back what is merely profitable or compliant while drawing down what sustains it.

How it reads a system. The way a physician reads a body, from several vital signs taken together rather than one: the condition of the soil and what lives in it, whether the enterprise sustains itself without drawing down what keeps it alive, and what is passed between hands and generations. Ecological, social and economic pillars are observed together because that is how living systems hold, and how they fail.

On trajectory over snapshot. A venture at +20 and climbing can stand above one settled at +60, which is why it is scored in the field, revisited year on year, and set inside the investment decision rather than beside it.

Not published here. The scoring intervals for each indicator, the gate thresholds, and the bioregional baseline method remain internal.
