Why both

Why both, not either.

Regeneration on its own relapses. Systems thinking on its own changes nothing in the ground.

Why both,
not either

Two ways to be
half right.

Regeneration without systems thinking

ONE FARM

You heal one farm.

Nothing around it changed, so the farm carries the whole cost of being different. The buyer still will not pay. The bank still will not lend.

It relapses when the funding stops.

A garden inside a desert.

Systems thinking without regeneration

NO PATH · NO PIN · NOBODY THERE

You map the whole system. Flows, incentives, feedback loops, leverage points.

The map is correct.

Nothing in the ground changes, and there is no standard for what better means, so almost any change can be called progress.

A map of a place nobody goes.

What happens when the support stops
LOW HIGH LAND HEALTH TIME → SUPPORT ENDS REGENERATION ALONE INSIDE A SYSTEM THAT CHANGED

Illustrative. Not measured data.

On its own, it does not hold.

Regeneration heals one place. Systemic is what makes it last: able to sustain itself, and to absorb the next shock rather than break under it.

The shape of it

There is a safe place to live.
It has two edges.

The inner edge

Fall inside it and people go without. Food, water, housing, a voice.

The outer edge

Push past it and nature breaks. Climate, freshwater, soil, wildlife.

The ring between them

The safe and fair place for everyone. That is the space we want wider.

Sustainability tries to keep us inside it.

Regeneration makes the space bigger.

After Kate Raworth, Doughnut Economics (2017). Social foundations after the UN SDGs. Planetary boundaries after Richardson et al. (2023).

The full framing. Between a social foundation no one should fall beneath and an ecological ceiling no economy should press beyond lies the safe and just space for humanity. Sustainability stops at the ceiling: it asks only that we cease overshooting. Regeneration goes further, restoring soils, water cycles and living systems so the safe and just space itself widens.

Where the outer edge currently stands. Richardson et al. report six of the nine planetary boundaries already crossed: climate change, biosphere integrity, land-system change, freshwater change, biogeochemical flows, and novel entities. We have not verified the full author list, and the assessment is a 2023 snapshot of a framework that is revised.

PEOPLE GO WITHOUT HERE NATURE BREAKS PAST HERE THE SAFE AND FAIR SPACE
Watch the ring grow.
